How to submit a WhatsApp chat as court evidence
Export the full conversation from WhatsApp rather than taking screenshots, convert it to a paginated PDF with a timestamp on every message, keep the original exported file unaltered as your source, and ask your lawyer what format their court requires. Screenshots are the most common mistake — they are easy to challenge and hard to cite.
Why screenshots are the weakest option
Screenshots are what most people bring, and they cause the most problems:
- They are trivially easy to crop, so an opposing party can argue you selected only the helpful parts.
- They have no page numbers, so nobody can refer to "the message on page 14".
- Two hundred images in an email is genuinely difficult for a solicitor to work with.
- They usually show no year, and often no full date at all.
A continuous exported transcript addresses all four. It shows the conversation running unbroken across a period, which is much harder to characterise as cherry-picked.
What a usable evidence bundle normally contains
- A timestamp on every message — date and time, not just time.
- Both participants identified in a header, with phone numbers if you have them.
- Numbered pages, so a specific message can be cited in a statement or skeleton.
- A stated date range, with no unexplained gaps inside it.
- The original export file kept safe and unmodified, in case anyone asks to see the source.
The process
1. Export the whole relevant period
In WhatsApp: open the chat, tap ⋮ → More → Export chat. Export the entire period that matters, not only the messages that help you. A transcript with visible gaps invites the question of what was removed.
2. Keep the original file untouched
Copy the exported .txt or .zip somewhere safe and do not edit it. This is your source document. If authenticity is ever questioned, being able to produce the unaltered original matters more than the formatting of the PDF.
3. Produce a paginated PDF

4. Ask before you file
Requirements differ. Some courts want a witness statement exhibiting the transcript. Some want the device made available. Some accept a plain printout. Your lawyer will know; ask before you spend an evening on formatting.
Courts are generally less interested in how pretty the document is than in whether the messages are genuine and complete. Anything that looks edited, selectively cropped or reconstructed is a liability. Export the real conversation, keep the original file, and do not retype or "tidy up" messages.
