How to export a WhatsApp chat to PDF
Three steps, about thirty seconds. The first one happens inside WhatsApp.
Export the chat from WhatsApp
Open the conversation, tap the ⋮ menu, then More → Export chat. Choose Without media for a text-only file, or Include media to bring the photos along.
Open the file in Chat Exporter
Pick the exported .txt or .zip. The app reads it on your phone — no upload, no server, no waiting on a connection.
Get your PDF
Timestamped, paginated and ready to save, print, email or hand to a solicitor. Filter by date range first if you only need part of the conversation.
What people use it for
Almost always the same reason: a conversation suddenly needs to be a document.
Legal and court matters
Family, divorce and custody cases where the chat history is part of the picture. Timestamps and page numbers let a solicitor cite a specific message.
How to prepare it →Landlord and consumer disputes
The repair that was promised, the deposit that wasn't returned, the contractor who stopped replying. Small claims runs on conversations like these.
Read the guide →Visa and immigration evidence
Spouse and partner applications often ask for proof of an ongoing relationship. A dated, continuous chat log is straightforward to file.
What caseworkers look for →Workplace and HR
Documenting a grievance, a handover, or an agreement reached over chat rather than email.
Business and client records
Scope, prices and deadlines agreed on WhatsApp. Archive them monthly, or pull one thread when a client disputes what was said.
Keeping what matters
Messages from someone you've lost, a child's first conversations, a trip group chat. Accounts close and phones change — a PDF doesn't.
A gentle guide →Your chats never leave your phone
There is no server to upload to and no account to create. The app opens the file you exported, formats it, and writes a PDF — all on the device, and all of it works in airplane mode. For a legal matter, a medical record or a conversation with someone who has died, that is not a nice-to-have.
What you get
Timestamps on every message
Date and time beside each line, with the sender's name — not just a wall of text.
Numbered pages and a header
Participants listed at the top and a page number on every page, so a specific message can be cited.
Date-range filtering
Export a single month instead of three years. Useful when you only need one period.
Handles very large chats
Tens of thousands of messages, with a progress bar rather than a crash.
Photos included
Export with media and the images appear inline in the PDF.
Proper multi-language support
Hindi, Arabic, Cyrillic, Georgian and emoji render correctly — no boxes or question marks.
Save, share or print
Straight to Downloads, or out to email, cloud storage or a printer.
One-time purchase
Pro unlocks once and stays unlocked, including future updates. No subscription.

How do I export a WhatsApp chat to PDF on Android?
Open the chat in WhatsApp, tap the ⋮ menu, choose More → Export chat, then pick “Without media” or “Include media”. WhatsApp produces a .txt or .zip file. Open that file in Chat Exporter and it becomes a formatted PDF. WhatsApp itself cannot produce a PDF — it only exports plain text, which is why a second step is needed.
Is my data private?
Yes. The app has no server and no account system. Your exported file is read on your phone, the PDF is written on your phone, and nothing is transmitted anywhere. You can put the device in airplane mode and the export still works. See the privacy policy.
Can WhatsApp chats be used as evidence in court?
Often, yes — but it depends on the country, the court and the case, and usually on being able to show the messages are authentic and unaltered. Chat Exporter formats your conversation so it is easy to read, cite and file, with timestamps and page numbers. It cannot make a conversation admissible on its own. Ask your lawyer or caseworker what format they need before you file anything.
Can I include photos and videos?
Choose “Include media” when exporting from WhatsApp and photos are placed inline in the PDF. Videos are included as files rather than as inline previews.
Will it handle a very long chat?
Yes. Chats with tens of thousands of messages export with a progress indicator. Note that WhatsApp itself limits how much history it will export in one go, particularly when media is included — if you need a long period, export it in date ranges.
What does it cost?
The app is free to download and free to try. A one-time Pro unlock removes watermarks and adds Pro features, and it is priced in your local currency — Google Play shows the exact amount before you buy. There is no subscription and no recurring charge.
Does it work with SMS or other messaging apps?
Yes for SMS, and for any app that can export a chat as a .txt file. WhatsApp is the most common source, but the app reads the exported file rather than the app itself.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet — Chat Exporter is Android only for now. You can still open a chat file exported from an iPhone on an Android device.
Export your first chat in about thirty seconds
Free to download, works offline, nothing uploaded.
